Geoff McGhee

Geoff McGhee is a journalist, data visualization practitioner, and creative technologist who has worked in media and academic roles in the United States and abroad. He is a veteran of the infographics and multimedia staffs of The New York Times, ABC News, and France’s Le Monde. In 2020, he was part of a team at High Country News that won the George Polk, Investigative Reporters and Editors and Sigma Data Journalism prizes for an exploration of the ongoing legacy of Indigenous land appropriated to fund US universities.

At Stanford University, he created “Journalism in the Age of Data,” an acclaimed documentary about data journalism and visualization, and developed new forms of digital academic publications for the university’s Center for the American West. He continues to work at the nexus of research and journalism through projects like Stanford’s ‘& the West,’ The Water Desk at the University of Colorado, and with such clients as Global Fishing Watch, The Committee to Protect Journalists, The Nature Conservancy, and others.

In the newsroom, he oversaw several digital multimedia desks and developed stories using a blend of scripted narration, information graphics, photos, and video to reach millions of users with breaking news and feature stories. In 2000, he launched a comics-driven news website for 8-12 year olds, ABCNews4Kids. He is based in Seattle.
